Autumn half term 2026

HEADTEACHER'S WELCOME

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our October newsletter for a round up of what’s been going on at school since we returned after the summer break.

Our Year 7’s and 12’s have settled in well to their learning, made new friends and seem at home. Read on to get a flavour of what the 7’s and 12’s have said about school.

We were delighted to celebrate Mr Burnett receiving his Governor of the Year award this term for long service.  This was a Trust-wide award and recognises Mr Burnett’s 20+ years of service.  Thank you, Mr Burnett, we very much appreciate your support and advice.

We held our annual awards ceremonies in October to celebrate the effort, achievement and tutor contribution for last academic year. These are formal events where the winners collect their awards in front of their peers.  It’s one of most eagerly anticipated events of the first term. Choosing winners at Plymouth High is always tricky given the huge pool of talent we have at our school, but winners were selected and are to be congratulated.

Our PTFA work tirelessly in the background doing a super job to support the school and they held their AGM in October.  You can find out more about the PTFA here. The PTFA raise money for the school via the events they run and also their weekly lottery. If you would like to take part, please click this link.

Finally, a reminder that we are running our 26 in '26 reading challenge and recently announced the winner of our Extreme Reading competition.  All the entries were great and we very much enjoyed judging them.

Wishing you all a happy October holiday and we look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday 3rd November.

Very best wishes,

Simon Underdown

Year 12 Core Mathematics

Mathematics for real life

Many people think mathematics is only about equations and exams. Core Mathematics challenges that idea by helping students apply mathematical thinking to real-life situations, from managing money to analysing data and making informed decisions. The AQA Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) qualification focuses on topics such as personal finance, estimation, data analysis and the interpretation of statistics, providing students with valuable skills for higher education, employment and everyday life.

This term, our Year 12 Core Mathematics students have enthusiastically embraced the practical nature of the course. One of their first topics was Fermi estimation, where students learn to make sensible estimates using limited information. Rather than relying on exact data, they break complex problems into manageable steps and develop reasoned approximations. Students have tackled questions such as:

  • How many balloons would it take to fill the school gym?
  • How many fish might live in Loch Ness?

Activities like these encourage logical thinking, problem-solving and an appreciation of how mathematics can be used to answer seemingly impossible questions.

Alongside estimation, students have explored personal finance, a key component of the AQA specification. They have investigated how credit cards, borrowing, repayments, APR (Annual Percentage Rate) and AER (Annual Equivalent Rate) affect financial decision-making. These are concepts that many adults encounter daily, making this learning particularly valuable and relevant.

Looking ahead, students will continue to develop their financial literacy by studying:

  • Income Tax and National Insurance
  • Mortgages and housing finance
  • Student loans
  • Further work on percentages and estimation
  • Data analysis and interpretation

In Year 13, students will also be introduced to the Normal Distribution, a powerful statistical model used to analyse data and identify patterns and probabilities. This is widely used across fields including science, economics, psychology and business.

Core Mathematics is an important stepping stone towards becoming financially informed and confident. The skills students have already developed provide a strong foundation for understanding borrowing, saving and making informed financial choices in later life. Just as importantly, the course demonstrates that mathematics is not confined to a textbook; it is a practical tool that helps us interpret the world around us.

It has been particularly pleasing to see how positively Year 12 students have engaged with the course. They have embraced learning that is both academically rigorous and immediately useful, bringing mathematics to life through real-world contexts and challenges.

Year of Reading 2026: Take the 26 in '26 challenge

At Plymouth High School for Girls, we are proud to continue to celebrate the National Year of Reading through our exciting 26 in ’26 Reading Challenge. The challenge encourages students and staff to complete 26 different types of reading across the year, reminding us that reading is far more than just novels. News articles, blogs, magazines, recipes, song lyrics, instructions, comics and biographies all count! Reading widely helps to develop vocabulary, improve writing, strengthen academic performance and broaden understanding of the world around us.

How are you getting on?

Our message to students is simple: read a little more, every page matters.

Research consistently shows that regular reading improves literacy, confidence and attainment across the curriculum. At Plymouth High, we strive to create a word-rich environment where every subject supports literacy and encourages students to develop precise and ambitious vocabulary.

Parents and carers play a vital role in nurturing a love of reading. Talking about books, discussing articles, sharing recommendations and encouraging reading habits at home can make a significant difference to a young person's academic success and personal development.

Why not make reading an adventure?

Our recent Extreme Reading initiative challenged students and teachers to be photographed reading in unusual places, celebrating the idea that reading can happen anywhere and everywhere. Entries included reading whilst upside down, climbing, and while paddleboarding!

It is not too late to take up the challenge in 2026 and discover how reading a little more can help us become stronger, wiser and more confident learners.

Year 7

The fresh voices of our new Year 7 students provide a wonderful insight into life at Plymouth High, and the feedback gathered this term paints an overwhelmingly positive picture of their experience so far. Students spoke enthusiastically about their transition from primary to secondary school, highlighting how quickly they have settled, made new friendships and become part of our friendly school community.

A recurring theme in the feedback was a strong sense of belonging. Students describe Plymouth High as a welcoming and inclusive environment where they feel supported by both staff and their peers. Many reflected on the confidence they have gained since joining the school and spoke positively about the kindness shown by teachers and fellow students.

Students also shared their appreciation for the breadth of opportunities available to them, including clubs, extracurricular activities, specialist teaching spaces and the chance to study a wide range of subjects. Drama, Food Technology, PE, History, Science and Modern Foreign Languages were frequently mentioned as subjects that students particularly enjoy, with many commenting on how exciting it has been to experience new areas of learning.

Encouragingly, students feel they are making strong progress across the curriculum and value the challenge presented by their lessons. They spoke positively about learning new skills, developing greater independence and growing in confidence as learners. Many recognised the significant personal growth they have experienced in a relatively short period of time.

Our House system was also praised for helping students build friendships, develop a sense of identity and feel part of something bigger.

Perhaps most importantly, our Year 7 students described themselves as happy, welcomed and valued members of the Plymouth High community. Their reflections demonstrate the strength of our inclusive culture and the success of the transition process in helping every student make a positive start to their secondary school journey. We are incredibly proud of the way our newest students have embraced the opportunities available to them and look forward to supporting them as they continue to flourish.

Year 12

And welcome also to our brand new Year 12 cohort who have settled well into Sixth Form life!

Students choose Plymouth High for a variety of personal reasons, but overwhelmingly we hear that it is down to our strong reputation, positive atmosphere, and high-quality teaching with teachers that students know and trust. Both internal and external applicants have praised the Sixth Form team for the Taster Day, Induction day and the support they receive both before and since joining.

"I had wanted to join Plymouth High since Year 9 but there were no spaces, so when the opportunity arose to join Year 12, I took it!"

The transition process was felt to be smooth and well-organised, with students quickly make new friendships and feeling part of the school community. External students were particularly positive about the warm welcome and clear communication from staff before the start of term.

"It was a little scary thinking about joining a new school, but the team-building event on the first day helped me make new friends".

"I have felt 100% included. It's a really friendly and welcoming school".

Students felt workloads this term have been manageable and enjoyable, especially as they are now studying subjects they have chosen and feel passionate about. They have described being well-supported in learning new routines and developing their organisational skills, knowing where to access help and guidance whenever needed.

"You can't remember everything when it's given to you all at once, so having key information repeated before and during the term has been very useful".

It's been wonderful hearing our new students speaking so enthusiastically about their school experience, describing themselves as happy, settled and excited for the opportunities ahead. As one student summed up:

"I love this school...I'm really, really happy!"

PTFA

AGM

The PTFA held their AGM on Tuesday 13th October. The minutes of the meeting are available on this page here.

Did you know that our PTFA also have their own dedicated Facebook and Instagram pages?  Why not give them a 'follow'?

School Lottery

Our wonderful and hardworking PTFA have decided that they would like to trial the use of School Lottery to raise funds for school. Whilst the PTFA are not intending to specifically promote gambling, they have found that many schools have successfully used School Lottery to raise funds for school for those little extra things. Parents can find out more about School Lottery here.

Of course, there would be no expectation that parents buy lottery tickets, and the option to contribute to school via the usual methods to the PTFA remain open.

Should parents decide to take part in school lottery, some of the cost of each ‘ticket’ does go to School Lottery to cover things like administration costs. However, there are prizes, just like in any lottery, and a share of the ticket money comes directly to school.

Should you wish to get involved, please click here.

School Notices

HOME-to-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Students may contact staff if they have queries, firstly by visiting them in their department area, and only contacting them using school email system if they really can’t see them in person.

Parents may wish to contact staff. The following outlines what the Headteacher regards as important considerations regarding home/school communication, particularly by email:

¨ All communication must respect the dignity of the recipient.

¨ Within 48 hours: receipt of an email will be acknowledged by school either by the person contacted, or the most appropriate person able to deal with the issue (term time only, not after 5pm nor over a weekend).

¨ Within 5 working days: school will provide a response to the email by telephone or in writing, or e-mail.  This may include informing the sender that more time is required to provide a full response.  If this is the case, staff should indicate a time frame for a response.

¨ Staff will not be expected to monitor or respond to emails outside their normal working hours (nor at weekends and published school holidays).

Whilst this is extremely rare, if a member of staff receives an e-mail or call which is of an aggressive tone, sets unreasonable demands or could otherwise be interpreted as harassing, they will refer this to a senior line manager in the school, who will decide if consideration needs to be given to dealing with further communication under our Complaints Policy.

PARKING

Out of respect for our neighbours and for health and safety reasons, there is NO PARKING on the school site or for collecting/dropping off students on the double yellow lines outside our school gates.

FSM - SCHOOL HOLIDAYS VOUCHERS

Following changes to the UK Government’s guidance, unfortunately we are no longer able to provide school holiday food vouchers for families eligible for Free School Meals. If you need support with the cost of living, benefits advice, or resources and free activities for children in the holidays, there is lots of information available on www.plymouth.gov.uk/cost-living

STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL DURING THE SCHOOL DAY

For safety reasons, if your child has to leave school during the school day, and you are unable to collect them, we must receive clear instructions that you give permission for them to leave unaccompanied. Without your express instructions to this effect, we will not allow any students to leave school unless they are collected by an adult from reception.

BENEDICT'S LAW

A reminder that our school is allergy and 'nut aware', and we ask that people do not brings nuts or nut-containing products onto the site.

However, our community will no doubt understand that we cannot guarantee an entirely nut-free environment.

SOCIAL MEDIA & ONLINE SAFETY

Our children are spending more and more time on their mobile phones.  Making them aware of the dangers of social media and protecting them from these dangers can be very challenging.

To help safeguard your child, please regularly take the time to talk to them about the way they use their social media apps:

  • Do they always know who they are engaging with?
  • Do they share their passwords?
  • Do they feel comfortable with what they are seeing and doing?
  • Do they feel pressure from “friends” to do/say things they don’t want to?

For more information regarding online safety, please visit our website: www.phsg.org
