Homework

At PHSG, we feel that homework is an important part of school and helps students to learn independently. It also re-enforces the learning completed during lessons and helps to develop good self-discipline and an effective work ethic.

The majority of our students make a real effort with their homework, and we are pleased with their attitude. We are grateful to our supportive parents who help to ensure that good routines are in place at home and ensure that homework is done regularly and to the best of their child’s ability.

We do not operate a ‘one size fits all’ homework schedule; instead, homework is set when it most effectively supports learning to ensure that it is purposeful. Each subject area will set homework either weekly or fortnightly in Years 7, 8 and 9. In a bid to help students to plan their time outside the school day, we have a homework timetable which includes the specific approach that subject areas will take.

A quiet space for students to complete their homework is available every day in the library after school, where students can use ICT equipment if they wish.

A supervised dedicated study room is available every breaktime and lunchtime in Room 5 alongside use of both of the Learning Resource Centre rooms (LRC1 & LRC2).

Many departments have drop in sessions and clubs dedicated to assisting students in their specific subjects. Please have a look at our clubs and teams' website page here for further information on what is available.

Research shows that children who complete their homework to re-enforce their learning often perform much better in school than those who do not complete all of their homework. We are very keen to work together with you to help our students develop good routines.

Please encourage your child to develop good homework routines at home. Some possible examples are:

To spend a set or agreed amount of time working independently each weekday evening in a quiet room.
No electronic games/TV/social media before their homework is completed or until they have worked for the agreed amount of time.
Ensure that they do regular work at home. Sometimes students may say that they don’t have homework, and whilst this may be the case now and then, it is more likely that there are some tasks that need completing. If students have finished their set tasks, they could revisit their learning, perhaps by – reading and/or revising to re-enforce learning and to develop good habits and routines. A small amount of work regularly is often better than a large amount at the ‘last minute’.

Please avoid completing homework late at night.
