Admissions and entrance examinations

Consultation on admission arrangements for 2023/2024

We will be consulting on our admission arrangements for 2023/2024 through Plymouth City Council. The consultation will be live until the 16th January 2022. THIS IS NOW CLOSED. If you wish to find out about our policy or make any comment, please visit www.plymouth.gov.uk/admissionconsultation.

Practice 11+ Examination and how to register

Plymouth High School will be running a practice test for the 11+ examination on Saturday 25th June 2022.

There is no obligation for girls seeking a place at PHSG to attend the practice session, but it does provide an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the type of test paper and under the same exam conditions they will experience in September with the real 11+ examination.

If your child is eligible for free school meals, the cost of the practice examination will be covered by PHSG; please notify the school at the time of applying.

Once we have received your application and payment a booking confirmation email will be sent to you.

Please note:

Registering for the 11+ Practice Examination does NOT give you automatic entry for the 11+ Examination.  To register your daughter to sit the 11+ Examination, parents/carers need to access the Plymouth City Council website: http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/11plus.htm

GL Assessment have released free familiarisation materials on their website for parents and students who would like to see the layout prior to the main 11+ examinations.

The 11-plus examinations assess your child’s academic ability by using GL Assessment English Comprehension and Mathematics paper.

NB: The 11+ Practice examination paper may include more questions than are set out in the free GL practice papers. Last year the English paper included 64 questions and the Mathematics paper included 50 questions. The English and Maths papers were 45 minutes and 50 minutes in length respectively.

Pupil premium support

Exciting new element as part of our strategy to attract more students from disadvantaged backgrounds into both Plymouth High School for Girls and Devonport High School for Girls

We believe it is essential that everything possible is done to raise aspirations and provide support to families whose children are eligible for pupil premium funding within the education sector. We are keen to increase the number of children from disadvantaged backgrounds attending our grammar schools so that they can benefit from a selective education if it is the right choice for them.

In addition to the free online guides and familiarisation resources offered by GL Assessment available below, we are offering, girls eligible for pupil premium funding, further support and are delighted to announce that we have funded an online course for them which has been put together by the Grammar School Heads’ Association. The course includes video content, practice questions and advice about taking the 11+ assessment. There are 8 one-hour lessons available which children can work through independently.

Our hope is that by working through the tasks online, students will become more familiar with the type of questions that they will be required to complete during the 11+ assessment.
If you are interested in being included in this programme of support and your daughter is eligible for pupil premium please email anettleship@dhsg.co.uk.

Admission Tests (11+ Examinations)

Admission to Plymouth High School is made through Plymouth City Council. Pupils are selected through academic ability with all candidates required to sit the 11+ examination. The examination is designed to measure a child’s academic ability and determine whether she would be suited to a grammar school education.

The 11+ examinations assess your child’s academic ability by using GL Assessment English Comprehension and Mathematics papers (multiple choice) and an extended writing paper (used only in the case of an appeal).  https://www.gl-assessment.co.uk/

GL Assessment have released free familiarisation materials on their website for parents and students who would like to see the layout prior to the main 11+ examinations.

The 11-plus examination will take place before the closing date for submission of the application form for a school place and parents / carers are required to register their child to take the examination. Further details of this procedure and information to help you apply for a Year 7 secondary place within Plymouth can be found in the ‘Next Step Parents Guide’ which is available from the Plymouth City Council website.

Plymouth High School’s published admission number (PAN) for Year 7 is 120. The school consistently receives more applications than places available. There may be places available for students seeking transfer in years 8, 9 and 10. In year admissions are made via an application through Plymouth City Council and the satisfactory completion of a school set admissions test to clarify candidates’ ability and aptitude.

How to Register for 11+ Examination

To register your daughter to sit the 11+ examination, parents/carers need to apply through the Plymouth City Council website.

The results of the examination will not confirm that a place will be offered.  The letter is intended to allow parents time to make an informed choice of school before they have to express their preferences for a Secondary School via Plymouth City Council’s admissions application form

In the event that an applicant is denied a place at the school, the parent/carer will have the right of appeal to an independent appeal panel. Information relating to the appeal process can be obtained from Plymouth City Council’s School Admissions Team and will be outlined in any letter of refusal of admission. The appeals timeline is available on the Plymouth City Council’s School Admission webpage:

In-Year School Admission

If your child is already at school, or you are relocating, and you want a transfer of school to Plymouth High School for Girls, you can apply using the in-year school transfer application through our Local Authority, see below.

Once the application is completed then your child will be placed on a waiting list. Once at the top of the waiting list and a space becomes available, the Head of Year will contact you, to arrange the 11+ Examination for your child. This will take place in an examination setting, normally at the school with a designated invigilator. If your child is successful, then a place is offered at our school.

We are happy to offer tours to any students who are interested in applying to our school. Please contact the relevant Head of Year that your child will be applying for, and they can arrange this for you.

Virtual Tour of the School

Due to the current restrictions imposed due to COVID-19, regretfully we are not able to welcome students for visits into the school at this time. We have created a open day webpage, which provides a video welcome address given by the Headteacher Simon Underdown and a virtual tour of the school offering visitors the opportunity to meet some of the staff and familiarise themselves with the grounds.

Please click on the button below to start our general virtual tour.
