Hummingbird races at Greenpower finals at Goodwood race track

On Sunday the 9th October, Team Hummingbird took to the tracks and competed in the Greenpower Education Trust Formula 24 finals at the legendary Goodwood racing track.

Hummingbird has been racing since 2011 and after 11 years is still deemed one of the best cars in the SouthWest. This was demonstrated at the SW heats last term at Predannack, where they won both races, earning them a position in the Goodwood final this year.

Hummingbird is no stranger to the Goodwood track, and we were delighted that the majority of the team was able to attend this year, along with some of our parents who joined us to cheer and support the team throughout the day. We were even joined by previous Team member who had made their way to the final to show support for the long-standing Hummingbird. The team members consisted of the Driving Team, Pit Crew, Communications Team and Performance Team, with very little funding or sponsorship our team have become creative in the improvements they have made this year, recycling parts and using their experience to prepare the car for the final..

The Hummingbird Team had an early blow when one of our drivers broke her foot a week before the final. Holly had to step down as a Goodwood driver and became instrumental in supporting the team on the day. Instead, Seren stepped in as a last minute driver. Seren, who was originally a member of the pit crew, had never actually driven the car before and her first time behind the wheel was during the practice laps alongside the 75 other cars around the Goodwood track!

Our team was hoping for a top 20 spot, and we are pleased that the races ran smoothly for Hummingbird on the day, with the main variables coming from the weather. The bright sunlight meant the sun visors were down for the drivers and the windy conditions proved challenging during the practice laps which meant that the data collected during those laps was not reliable enough to transfer into the main races. Again, the experience from the Performance Team exam kicked in, and we were delighted to have come in 18th position overall.

We would like to thank all the students for their resilience and positive attitude, making the Hummingbird Team a force to be reckoned with.

We would also like to thank the staff that volunteer their time to 'make this happen' and provide the students with this opportunity of lifelong experiences. Specifically, to Mr Thackray and Miss Cook for their expertise and continuous support to the students in their Hummingbird journey.
