Success for Year 10 at Young Chef Team Challenge 2022

City College Plymouth, hosted the annual Young Chef Team Challenge completion last week and we are delighted that our student's skills and hard work was awarded with a prize.

Last week Mrs Brown, our Food and Nutrition teacher, had the privilege of taking three of our year 10 students to the Young Chef Team Challenge competition hosted by City College Plymouth.  Maia, Diya and Annie competed with 6 other schools from across Plymouth and SE Cornwall to cook a three-course meal for Plymouth Albion players making use of fresh, seasonal food.  They were to use fresh mackerel in the starter; chicken breast fillets in the main course; and rhubarb in the dessert.

The team selected to represent PHSG, planned a menu of:

  • Lemon pan-fried mackerel, crispy salted new potatoes, and roasted radish, beetroot and fennel salad with vinaigrette
  • Creamy butter chicken with garlic naan, refreshing raita and mango chutney
  • White chocolate and roasted raspberry mille feuille with blackberry coulis

The competition was fierce and it took the judges 45 minutes to deliberate.  Head judge Ross Norton congratulated all of the entrants on the exceptional standard of cooking and was amazed by the level of skill being shown by all the young people who entered.

In the end our team were victorious in clinching the prize for best dessert and were awarded a commemorative certificate and wooden spoon, as well as a voucher to use in the PL1 restaurant.

The students involved said that although it was stressful at times they really enjoyed the experience of cooking in the professional kitchens and working as a team to complete their dishes.  I am immensely proud of them and look forward to seeing what next year’s team can do!
