Our school and Trust is superbly supported by a large and dedicated board of volunteer Governors. These people give freely and generously of their time and are fully invested in helping each school in their continuous improvement journey. This year, we are proud and delighted to share that Mr Roger Burnett, PHSG Governor, has been awarded the coveted long service award. The selection panel consisting of the CEO, Chair of the Board, and Head of Governance & Compliance were hugely impressed with the impact Mr Burnett has had and the way he goes about his role. He is kind, knowledgeable and PHSG through and through.
Mr Burnett has been honoured in recognition of his exceptional and sustained contribution to our school community, and later, Trust community over more than two decades.
Mr Burnett’s relationship with Plymouth High began as a Parent Governor in 2010 when his daughter attended, and since then he has remained a steadfast, committed, and deeply engaged member of our governing body, remaining on as a community governor after his daughter left the school. His service has been defined by integrity, generosity of time, and an unwavering belief in improving the life chances of every student.
Throughout his tenure, he has been a passionate advocate for STEM education, championing opportunities that have broadened students’ horizons and strengthened our curriculum. His support has extended far beyond the meeting room: he has accompanied students on school trips, represented the governing body at countless events and staff appointments, and consistently acted as a visible, approachable, and trusted presence within the school community. Mr Burnett’s contributions are always well‑considered, rooted in a deep understanding of the school, and focused on what will most benefit our pupils.
As a Headteacher, I have valued Mr Burnett’s support enormously. He has been a reliable source of wise counsel – constructive, honest, and always grounded in what is right for children. His ability to ask the right questions, offer clarity, and provide reassurance has strengthened leadership and governance alike.
Mr Burnett’s long service, his willingness to step forward whenever needed, and his consistent commitment to our school’s ethos, “For life, not school, we learn”, make him an outstanding Governor. He has played a significant role in improving outcomes, widening opportunities, and ensuring that every student is given the best possible chance to thrive. His contribution has been greatly valued, and this nomination reflects the deep appreciation felt across our school community.
Thank you for the award which was totally unexpected. I initially joined Plymouth High as a Parent Governor and subsequently co-opted onto the Governing Body. During my time there has been several changes at the school, most notably the decision of the school to join the Thinking Schools Academy Trust. Joining the Trust has brought huge benefits to the school estate as well as increased development opportunities for senior leaders, teachers, and of course students. Students are at the heart of everything we do. Going into the school or volunteering during extra-curricular activities, it is obvious to see the enthusiasm and enjoyment of the students. The students are proud to represent Plymouth High and their behaviour is a credit to the school. For the time being, I have no intention of leaving the Governing body!” – Mr Roger Burnett
