U13 Plymouth Schools Girls Football - history makers!

Year 8 students, Willow and Isla, are inspiring role models for the next generation of girls in sport

In advance of tonight’s important and no doubt nail-biting World Cup semi-final, we are delighted to celebrate Year 8 students, Willow Y and Isla A, 8A whose contributions to football this past season were outstanding throughout.
This year’s squad began their journey as genuine history makers, becoming the first-ever Plymouth School Girls Team – a milestone that comes more than 100 years after the formation of the first Plymouth School Boys Team!
The season got off to an inspiring start with a team-bonding climb of Mount Snowdon, followed by an early test in a Pro Academy tournament in London, where the girls produced a fantastic performance to emerge as winners. Throughout the season, the team visited leading academies, including Arsenal, Aston Villa, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester City – opportunities that further strengthened their ambition and belief.
Their main goal, however, was always the National Cup – and what followed was nothing short of remarkable. Competing in a challenging group alongside Brighton, Mid-Sussex, Cornwall, and Poole & Dorset, the girls delivered a perfect record of four wins from four, finishing top of their group!
Finally, in May, the team stepped onto the pitch at the Bet365 Stadium, home of Stoke City, to face Sefton (Liverpool), who had also enjoyed an unbeaten run. Rising to the occasion, the girls produced an outstanding performance, winning 2–0 and achieving the ultimate prize – National Champions!

This historic and meaningful achievement is about far more than football. To see the first ever Plymouth School Girls Team crowned National Champions was a powerful moment not only for the players themselves, but for girls’ sport across our city. The confidence and determination they demonstrated on the national stage will serve them far beyond the football pitch. They should be immensely proud of the legacy they have created.” – Mr Underdown

Willow and Isla reflect on their journey:

What inspired you start playing football?

Willow – I started kicking a ball when I was 7, inspired by my dad and older brother.  I used to love watching my brother play long before I started.

Isla – My knew that my friend played football, and then I started playing too when I was 10 years old.

What was going through your mind when you walked out at the Bet365 Stadium for the final?

Willow – To be honest, I have no clue! I was so excited to play, although also quite nervous.

Isla – I was pumped with adrenaline and just so happy to be there!

What did it feel like when the final whistle blew and you realised you were National Champions?

Willow – It felt amazing when we all ran to each other to celebrate!

Isla – When the whistle blew, we all ran to each other - it was an amazing moment!

What advice would you give to younger girls hoping to follow in your footsteps?

Willow – To follow your dreams and remember that mistakes are part of success.

Isla – Always follow your dreams!

And finally, what is your dream stadium to play in?

Willow – Etihad (I support Manchester City) and Wembley are both great stadiums!

Isla – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and, of course, Wembley.
