Happy 100th birthday, Sir David Attenborough!

100 years, one blue planet; a lifetime spent bringing us closer to nature
We have all grown up with the dulcet tones of Sir David’s voice on the television and radio and have enjoyed the way he explains the complex and fascinating interconnections of our planet’s wildlife.
In recent times, he has used his platform, along with other great conservationists like the late Dr Jane Goodall, to express his climate crisis concerns. Sir David has helped people to understand the impact of climate change on humans and all living things on the planet. He is relentless in his passion to communicate to everyone and has been an inspiration to many. As a geographer and educator, I admire his work so much. I know his legacy will live on aboard the research ships and that many species, alive and extinct, will be named after him.
I hope students recognise that individuals can make a difference, not by shouting the loudest or doing the most outrageous acts, but by working hard and demonstrating their passion in a way that Sir David has for so long.
Most of our students are fully aware that I am one of David’s biggest fans and had the pleasure of winning a competition to see the premier of the “One Planet” series in Bristol where the great man was to attend and give his overview of the new programme. He arrived flanked by two of the biggest bodyguards Bristol could find, and if my husband thought I was a crazy fan, I had nothing on the people who had homemade t-shirts, placards and headwear, all screaming at him like he was a rock star. His manner in person is what we see on our TV screens: quiet, calm, and humble. At the end of the event, he waved to us all, smiled, and walked slowly out. My most prized gifts from students have included a signed photo, a personalised mug, and a life-sized cutout which lives in my teaching room.
This week, tutor activities have included a quiz and reading from his book, Adventures Of A Young Naturalist, and both students and staff have been invited to sign a large ‘happy birthday’ card for Sir David while also enjoying the display of the story of his life. We will send the card next week.
Happy 100th birthday Sir David Attenborough!"
