Top of the region! Year 10 impress Royal Navy chefs

High‑pressure cook‑off turns into high‑level praise in culinary challenge

Year 10 GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition students recently enjoyed an exciting opportunity to work alongside chefs from the Royal Navy Logistics Specialist Attract Team (Wales and West of England).  The visit aimed to broaden students’ understanding of career pathways within the Royal Navy, while putting their culinary skills to the test in a dynamic Ready Steady Cook‑style challenge.

Working in teams, students were tasked with producing a technically demanding menu: Chicken Kiev with fondant potatoes followed by sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce.  The challenge required strong practical skills, attractive presentation, excellent communication, and effective teamwork under time pressure.

I was really impressed by both the team work and level of technical skill shown by all the students.  The way they plated their dishes showed a fantastic understanding of food styling and I am really excited to see how they continue to hone their skills before their assessed practical in Year 11 - Mrs Brown, Food & Textiles

Royal Navy chefs, Ryan and Kieran, were equally impressed by the professionalism and enthusiasm shown by the students.  They commented that the standard of work at Plymouth High School for Girls was the best they had experienced at any school within their region - an exceptional accolade considering they cover the whole of Wales and the West of England!

Students commented that they thoroughly enjoyed the experience, describing it as both fun and inspiring.

The challenge has shown me how a Food and Nutrition qualification can lead to so many different careers - not only in hospitality, but also in logistics, catering management, nutrition, and roles across the Armed Forces.

Judging the dishes proved incredibly difficult due to the exceptionally high standard across all teams.  As a result, every student was recognised for their achievement, each receiving a medal and certificate in one of the following categories:

  • Best Main
  • Best Dessert
  • Best Teamwork
  • Best Team Spirit

The event was a fantastic celebration of skill, creativity, and collaboration.  A huge well done to all our Year 10 students for embracing the challenge and representing Plymouth High School for Girls with such confidence and flair.
