PHSG students standing for Young Parliament

Voices of the future – Year 8 students, Eva and Gwen, aim to represent Plymouth

We are incredibly proud to share that two of our fantastic Year 8 students, Eva and Gwen, both in 8L, have been selected as candidates in the 2026 Plymouth Youth Parliament elections.  This is a brilliant achievement and a real testament to their confidence and willingness to use their voices to make a difference.

According to Plymouth City Council, this year’s Youth Parliament election is one of the biggest yet, with thousands of young people across the city heading to the polls to choose who will represent them on issues that matter most to Plymouth’s youth.  Young people aged 11–18 will be voting throughout the Spring term, with results announced on 25th March 2026.

This year, 11 inspiring candidates from across the city are campaigning on issues that directly affect the lives of our students and their communities.  And so, for not one but two of our own Year 8 students to be part of this group is truly exceptional.

Eva and Gwen now have a platform to share their ideas, champion the causes that matter to their peers, and help shape conversations at local, regional, and even national levels.

Eva's focus is on ensuring that music and creative spaces are more accessible, acknowledging the difference music can make to young people being able to express themselves; and Gwen is focusing on mental health issues in schools, creating safe spaces for conversations, and strengthening the understanding of teachers.  You can find more information about the elections here

Eva shared her excitement at the possibility of speaking in the House of Commons if elected, while Gwen is eager for the opportunity to collaborate with other youth leaders on important issues across the city.

Well done to both of you.  By stepping up to this role, you embody our school motto, ‘For life, not school, we learn.’  You are already demonstrating values and character that will shape your future and our community.  Wishing you every success! – Mr Underdown
