Catching the bug for biodiversity!

Students build biodiversity‑boosting bug boxes

Earth Alliance group students have been “catching the bug” for conservation through an inspiring, hands‑on challenge: designing and building bug boxes as part of the 2025 Trust‑wide environmental aims.

Last year’s Earth Alliance group members took part in an inter‑House competition to create purpose‑built bug boxes – from initial design sketches and planning, to testing materials and constructing the final builds.

The project had a clear goal: to increase biodiversity across the school site while helping students develop practical ecological and design‑thinking skills.

Students who took part really enjoyed the project, and their finished boxes look amazing.

All four completed bug boxes have now been placed on and around the school courts.  Keep an eye out – you might spot them on your way around the site!

These habitats provide safe spaces for insects such as ladybirds, woodlice, bees, and beetles, all of which play vital roles in local ecosystems.

The bug boxes will continue to be a focus for Earth Alliance throughout the year, with students monitoring activity around the boxes as part of the school’s new goal: The Woodland Trust Green Tree Schools Award for 2026.  This ongoing project supports the trust’s wider sustainability aims and encourages long-term environmental stewardship.
