Year 12 Mathematicians Explore the Future at Plymouth University Masterclass

Our Year 12 mathematicians recently had the exciting opportunity to attend a Maths Masterclass at Plymouth University, where they spent the day exploring the power of mathematics in solving real-world problems.

The day began with a lively problem-solving competition, which challenged students to think creatively and work collaboratively under time pressure. This was followed by fascinating sessions on the mechanics of waves, where pupils saw how mathematical principles help explain natural phenomena.

A highlight for many was programming driverless cars, offering a glimpse into the future of transport and the role mathematics plays in shaping it. Students also explored how cells multiply and how disease spreads, applying mathematical models to understand biological systems and epidemics.

At lunchtime, the university hosted a careers fair where every department was represented. This gave our students the chance to speak directly to academics and current undergraduates about a wide range of courses and career paths, helping them consider their options for life beyond school.

The day was both inspiring and thought-provoking, showing our students how mathematics underpins so many aspects of the modern world – from engineering and healthcare to technology and beyond.
