County hockey success for Lizzie and Eloise

Two Plymouth High students are celebrating a fantastic sporting achievement after being selected to represent Devon

Lizzie L (7T) and Eloise M (8L) have both earned places representing Devon, demonstrating the dedication, commitment and enthusiasm that have helped them excel in the sport they love.

For Lizzie, hockey has been a huge part of her life since she was just six years old. Inspired by her older brother Oliver, along with her mum and dad, hockey quickly became a family passion. She has also been inspired by local international GB player Giselle Ansley, even having the opportunity to be coached by her hockey hero! Reflecting on her Devon selection, Lizzie told us:

I am happy because I will be playing at a much higher level and I look forward to getting better with my team.”

Meanwhile, Eloise, who is now in her fourth year of hockey, was inspired to take up the sport by her family, many of whom have played hockey themselves. She plays for Plymouth Lions' Under 14 team and earned her Devon place following additional summer training sessions with county coaches and a trial process. Speaking about her successful selection, Eloise said:

I am excited but also nervous because it feels like a big step up - but I am looking forward to improving my skills.”

Both students also had some encouraging advice for anyone thinking about joining a new sports club or team with Lizzie offering reassurance that “everyone starts somewhere", adding the wise reminder that "you don't know until you try, so just turn up!”.

Eloise shared that although it can be scary at first, if you stick with it, it will eventually "become a part of you". Eloise feels positive that when getting involved in a sport, you "become part of a community" and with that comes the possibility of making like-minded new friends.

When asked to describe hockey in just one word, Lizzie chose "extraordinary", while Eloise selected "fast-paced" - two words that perfectly capture their own passion for the sport.

As these Plymouth High students begin their exciting new chapter representing Devon, both are looking forward to developing their skills, gaining new experiences, and challenging themselves at an even higher level.

Congratulations, Lizzie and Eloise! Your recent achievement reflects the determination, and commitment that make you both so very Plymouth High. We look forward to hearing more about your hockey journeys throughout the season and wish you every success!
