Leading with Pride

This week, Deputy Head Student, Zara, has been inspiring important conversations marking the start of Pride Month
Through a series of assemblies, Head Student Team representative Zara (Deputy Head Student, Inclusivity & Diversity) has been raising further awareness of equality, respect, and inclusivity within our school community, reinforcing a culture where everyone feels seen.
Pride Month takes place every June to celebrate LGBTQ+ communities, their history, and the progress that has been made. Students have been encouraged to reflect on why Pride is celebrated and how we can all support inclusivity in school, such as respecting others’ identities and pronouns, challenging bullying, and being supportive of different experiences.
Zara's engaging presentation reminded students of the significance of Stonewall in 1969, a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history which marked a turning point, sparking widespread activism and led us to the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Influential LGBTQ+ figures such as Alan Turing (mathematician and codebreaker), Marsha P. Johnson (activist), Elton John (musician/charity campaigner), and Olympians Nicola Adams (boxer) and Tom Daley (diver) have also been highlighted during the assemblies, demonstrating the impact LGBTQ+ individuals have had across different fields.

The message that Zara has powerfully conveyed is that Pride Month is about creating a community where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued, and that celebrating difference in fact makes our community stronger.
And watch this space because Zara, alongside our Sixth Form prefects, will also be hosting a charity fundraiser later this month which we hope students will enjoy - further details to follow!
I would like to thank Zara for the effort and commitment she has shown in representing the Head Student Team this week. Her maturity, leadership, and passion have helped to bring the important topic of Pride Month to life for our students, making a meaningful impact in our school community.” – Mr Underdown
