PHSG student attains prestigious Nidan grading

A pre-dawn test of strength and spirit!
On Saturday 14th February, after a four-and-a-half hour grading session that started at 4:30am (yes, AM!), Saskia J, Year 11 achieved the grade of Nidan in karate.
Saskia developed a passion for karate in her first year of primary school and now trains up to 4 hours a week. Her dojo is represented by students from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, and during her training there, Saskia has achieved 10 gold medals, 17 silver medals and 13 bronze medals. She has also earned the titles of Club Champion (2018), Shodan (2023) and of course now, Nidan.
Earning the grade of Nidan is a major step in karate, requiring around 2 years of training beyond that of 1st Dan. To achieve it, students must precisely demonstrate advanced kata techniques (structured, choreographed martial arts movements), along with solid theoretical knowledge and emerging leadership skills. The grading tests not just physical ability, but also maturity and focus.
The demanding test pushed Saskia physically and mentally, yet she showed resilience and determination throughout. Her refusal to give up stands as a testament to her dedication, self-discipline and strong spirit.
What's next?
Saskia now has her sights on Sandan (3rd Dan) which she hopes to achieve in the next few years, and also has ambitions to travel to Japan where she will be able to further develop her training and experience.
Congratulations Saskia, your commitment and growth sets an excellent example for your dojo and will inspire your fellow students here at PHSG! - Mr Underdown
