Soaring Success for Lily

Over the summer, Lily, 11T, achieved a remarkable milestone—her first solo flight in a glider!

After four practice launch failures, Lily’s instructor at the Devon and Somerset Gliding Club (DSGC) decided she was ready to take to the skies on her own. Launched by winch, Lily completed her first solo flight with a smooth 10-minute journey, followed by a second solo flight lasting 12 minutes—only ending because the club was breaking for lunch!

Lily has been training with DSGC since the age of 12 and her recent progress has been supported by a Scholarship from the British Women Pilots Association (BWPA). At just 15 years and 1 month old, Lily is one of the youngest solo glider pilots in the country—a truly impressive achievement.

We are incredibly proud of Lily and grateful to both DSGC and BWPA for their support in helping her reach this milestone. Her determination and passion for aviation are an inspiration to us all.

Congratulations, Lily! PHSG is cheering you on as you soar to new heights!
