A-Level Biologists Explore Wembury’s Coastal Wildlife

This week, our A-level Biology students took their learning out of the classroom and into the field with a visit to Wembury Beach. The trip formed part of the practical endorsement for their course, giving students the chance to apply ecological sampling techniques in a real-world setting.

We were fortunate to enjoy fine weather, which allowed for a full day of exploring the rocky shore. Students collected data on the distribution of species across the shore, from low to high tide marks, using quadrats and transects as part of their fieldwork.

A highlight of the day was a “Rockpool Safari” led by the Devon Wildlife Trust, who shared their expertise in identifying the incredible marine life found along our coastline. Students had the chance to observe and learn about fascinating species such as anemones, starfish, sea squirts, and even sea slugs.

It was a valuable and inspiring experience that helped bring ecological concepts to life—and reminded us just how rich and diverse our local marine environment truly is.
