Welcome to Plymouth High on behalf of the Governing Body.

Our purpose as a governing body is to support and improve the school through our involvement, providing a supportive, active and critical voice to ensure that the school achieves its maximum potential and every student achieves. Our vision is for an outstanding school that sees every student prepared for all aspects of their future life.

The three key functions for the Governing Body are:

  • To ensure that the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school are clearly defined;
  • To ensure that the Headteacher performs her responsibilities for the educational performance of the school;
  • To ensure the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources.

The school has a clear ethos of academic excellence alongside balanced personal development. This is shared in the school’s motto ‘For Life Not School We Learn’ and informs everything we do. Headteacher, Mary Utton, is determined to have the outstanding nature of the school recognised and celebrated, and under her dynamic leadership the school has continued to build on its excellent reputation. All members of staff ensure that this ethos of excellence and development is central in every subject area and informs the curriculum that we follow.

The governors are drawn from a wide variety of walks of life and each brings insight and expertise to their roles within the Governing Body. Each gives valuable time to their specific responsibilities and works hard to encourage and, where necessary, challenge the school to fully realise the students’ potential.

Plymouth High School sees itself as an innovative and forward thinking educational institution at the heart of collaborative work in the city. The School is proud of gaining the prestigious International Schools Award and is strongly committed to international activities across the curriculum. We have strong partnerships with schools in Europe and further afield; in particular, Ahantaman Secondary School, Ghana.

As a school, we see the creation of a caring and positive environment for every student to grow in personal development as crucial, and seek to ensure a level of care and support tailored to the individual student’s need. We delight in celebrating the achievements of our students, whether it is academic, sporting or personal, and look to encourage the girls through peer support and role models to raise their own aspirations. Our aim for students leaving the school is that they are ready to become the leaders of tomorrow, having grown academically and in their social, moral and personal development.
